Alicante is officially the sunniest city of Valencia, according to the latest data released by the INE National Statistics Institute.
The sun shone on the Costa Blanca capital for 2,820 hours during 2007, with an average year-round temperature of 19.1 degrees Centigrade. Rainfall was also the lowest in the region, with 512.5 millimetres.

The sunniest city in Spain two years ago was Huelva, with 3,120 hours of sunshine – more than double the amount in Bilbao – and the most rainy, also in the Basque Country, was San Sebastián, where 1,536.1 mm of rain fell throughout the year. Málaga, Granada and Cádiz joined Huelva in exceeding 3,000 hours of sunshine in 2007.

The Spanish meteorological station at Izaña, in the Teide National Park on Tenerife, recorded the lowest average temperature for 2007, 10.2 degrees. But it was also the spot with the most hours of sunshine, 3,845, and it was the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which was the hottest city in Spain, with an average temperature of 21.6 degrees.
