The judge instructing the Valencia side of the Gürtel corruption case implicating high-ranking members of the Partido Popular administrations in Madrid and Valencia has concluded his preliminary investigation. In a ruling issued this Monday, the judge at the High Court of Justice considers there to be ‘rational evidence’ of crimes; this means he will continue with the investigation into the Valencia President, Francisco Camps, the PP’s No. 2 in Valencia, Ricardo Costa, the ex Vice-President of the Valencia government, Víctor Campos, and Rafael Betoret from the Valencia provincial government.
All are under investigation for bribery for allegedly receiving gifts of suits from the network led by Francisco Correa, and it’s understood they all plan to appeal Judge José Flors’ decision.
A preliminary hearing has been set for 15th July where all parties concerned must be present, and where the defence will again have the opportunity to apply for a dismissal of the proceedings. Further investigations can be also be requested at that stage.
Judge Flors has interviewed dozens of witnesses since taking on the original National Court investigation, and has taken into account documentary evidence and the Valencia President’s official diary. El País reported this Monday new evidence found on a yacht which reportedly gives the money laundering police unit new data on the alleged bribery charge against Francisco Camps.
Conservative daily, El Mundo, says that those close to Camps think that his political future is linked now to his appeal against the case. If that fails and the case is not thrown out, the image of him sitting on the accused bench before a jury has created upset in the Generalitat Valenciana, and the paper says that some think that he could well resign.
