The Dama de Elche has been in Madrid’s National Archaeology Museum since 1971

The Mayor of Elche says he will continue working actively towards bringing the 4th Century bust known as the Dama de Elche back to the town where she was found in the late 19th Century.

Salvador Dalí’s most beautiful woman in the world was in Elche for just 26 days after she was discovered before being sold to the Louvre for less than 40 dollars. She returned to Spain in 1940 and has been held by the National Archaeology Museum in Madrid since the early 1970s, with a brief sojourn in Elche for a temporary exhibition three years ago. The Dama spent that trip in a special anti-vibration container and a controlled atmosphere amid tight security and a 15 million € insurance policy paid for by the Town Hall.

The local Mayor, Alejandro Soler, said this proves that moving the Lady of Elche is possible, despite Culture Minister Ángeles González-Sinde’s concerns for such a delicate piece. He’s asked for a meeting with the Minister to discuss a possible transfer, but told Diario Información that the Town Hall is open to dialogue and believes even a temporary transfer would be positive for the town.
