Three Civil Guard are amongst the 8 suspects arrested for smuggling the drugs into Galicia
Three Civil Guard are reported to be amongst eight suspects arrested in a National Police operation in Galicia which has seized more than 800 kilos of cocaine and smashed the smugglers’ entry point in Puerto de Marín, Pontevedra. One of the suspects is reported by EFE to be the sergeant in charge of the Civil Guard barracks in Puerto de Marín, and it’s understood a reserve sub-lieutenant is also in custody along with another Guardia.
The drugs were brought in from South America and this particular consignment was hidden in boxes of frozen prawns discovered on an industrial estate in La Coruña. The 12-month long investigation, with the collaboration of officers from Chile and the United States, discovered the leader of the network to be a lawyer based in Vigo. He used a company as a cover to import the drugs along with other merchandise, which were cleared through Puerto de Marín without any type of control.
The lawyer is said by the Interior Ministry to have been in contact with a number of traffickers to offer his network as a means of bringing drugs into the country. Police tracked this latest consignment since it was sent from Ecuador this May until its arrival in Pontevedra via Colombia.
