Forest fire destroys 26 hectares in Algeciras

The 118 local residents evacuated from their homes were allowed back home on Tuesday

A forest fire which broke out in the Chorrosquina area of Algeciras on Monday afternoon was brought under control the following afternoon, after destroying 26 hectares of trees and scrubland in Majadal Alto. It was reported as stable on Monday night, and teams of 35 fire fighting personnel with helicopter support remained at the scene until around 4pm on Tuesday, when there was seen to be no danger of it reviving.

More than a hundred local residents were evacuated as a precaution and spent Monday night either with relatives or in temporary accommodation set up in the Ciudad de Algeciras sports complex. They were allowed back home on Tuesday.
