The ecologists say Spain has direct responsibility for pollution which occurs from spillages during ship to ship fuel transfers

A Spanish fuel supply ship was the target of a Greenpeace protest in the Bay of Algeciras this Monday morning against the practice of ‘bunkering’, the transfer of fuel from a smaller supply vessel to another ship. The ecologists cite it as a common practice in Zone C of the deep water anchorage of Algeciras Port and say Spain has direct responsibility for polluting the Bay with the spillages which sometimes occur.

They say Monday’s bunkering operation took place near the protected waters of the Estrecho Natural Park and painted the words ‘Spain Pollutes’ on the side of the barge as a protest.

Greenpeace has called for an end to the bunkering practices and, together with other environmental organisations, sent a report last month to the Tripartite Forum on Gibraltar urging action on environmental issues. They claim that both the local environment and the health of local residents are suffering as a consequence of decades of neglect and a lack of cooperation between Gibraltar and Spain.
