The Gürtel case, the economy and Swine Flu lead the papers in SpainEl País is optimistic about the economy today, and headlines the strong recovery in GDP seen in China to 7.9%. The paper says that it will lead to the way out of the global recession, even though the Asian giant is the only of ten powers to see growth.
ABC headlines that the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is turning the screw to try and reach an agreement on ‘social dialogue’ – the much desired deal between Government, employers and unions.
However Público says that the employers want greater measures to be made and are delaying the process.
El Mundo leads with Cataluña today, and notes that the President of the Constitutional Court, María Emilia Casas, has told her colleagues that there is ‘no hurry’ to draw up a new sentence on the constitutionality or otherwise of the new Catalan statute. The paper notes this comes three years after the appeal was presented.
El Mundo also says that Antoni Castells has now increased the extra money which is going to Cataluña in the new finance deal – taking it to over 4 billion € according to the paper.
La Vanguardia reports that the income for Cataluña will depend on the health of the economy.
El Mundo has a front page photo of the funeral of the Rayan, the Moroccan premature baby who died following a tragic nursing error in Madrid earlier in the week.
His father is seen putting the small white coffin into the ground, next to the body of his mother who was the first victim in Spain of the A(H1N1) virus. The paper notes how water and fresh flowers were placed on the grave.
The paper reports that nurses at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital complained in 2008 that a lack of personnel was a risk to the babies.
ABC has a large front page photo from the funeral with a woman kissing the coffin, and captions that baby Rayan is now at rest next to his mother.
Público says that Rayan’s grandmother has described him as the only thing she had left of Dalilah, the mother. She has now lost three members of her family in Spain.
The papers note fatality three and four from the A(H1N1) virus in Spain with deaths confirmed in Palma and Madrid.
El País says a 33 year old Nigerian woman has died in Mallorca and a 71 year old man has died in Madrid.
The unbelievable story of the gang rape of a 13 year old girl by a gang of six boys, five of them underage, in Córdoba gets wide coverage.
El Mundo says that the nightmare of the 13 year old continues and that 15 days after the attack she still has to sleep with her mother.
El País notes that the PP President of the Valencia region, Francisco Camps, has now said that if he received any gifst is was because he is head of the regional Partido Popular, and not because he is head of the regional government.
Público dedicates its front page today to the Gürtel case, and says that the judge is now following the money. Judge Pedreira has sent out 15 different requests to try and locate the money allegedly sent by the network of companies owned by Francisco Correa. The paper says the organisation used opaque companies and frontmen.
Público notes that the anti corruption prosecutors’ office has called for Madrid and Valencia courts to interchange information on the case, and that Camps appeal against the case has been accepted for consideration.
El Mundo notes that Barack Obama has formally invite Zapatero to the next G-20 summit to be held in Pittsburgh on September 24 and 25.
Público says that the United States is to install five military bases in Colombia. It notes that the opposition have criticised Uribe for making the deal in secret.
La Vanguardia leads with news from Honduras where Micheletti has said that he will resign the presidency if Zelaya does not return.
El País looks back at an interview the paper carried out on the human rights activist, Natalia Estemirova, who was found killed this week. It highlights a quote ‘Chechnya is like the USSR in 1937’.
El País has a front page photo of fans at the Benicàssim and notes that Oasis on the first day broke attendance records, with a very high number of British visitors also reported.
And finally,
Coverage of an interview of Cristiano Ronaldo in Ireland in many papers today. El País says that he said ‘In Madrid, I’m just one more’.
