The ship was unable to set sail after crashing into the dock when arriving from Algeria
Almost a thousand passengers spent 20 hours on board a ferry docked at Alicante port this weekend, after strong winds caused the ship covering the route from Orán, Algeria, to crash into the dock on its arrival on Friday night. Those on board were able to disembark, and passengers for the Friday night trip to Orán, most of them from France, were told to board the ferry while technicians from the Port Authority tried to repair the dent in the ship’s stern.
In the event, the ‘Djazair’ remained in port and the passengers remained on board until Saturday evening, when they were allowed to disembark for a short time before returning to spend another night on the ferry. It’s understood that only some 40 or so chose to do so however. EFE reports a queue of some 120 cars at the port on Saturday, as passengers arrived for the cancelled Saturday night service.
The Alicante-Orán service was due to be resumed on Monday with the arrival of a replacement ship from Algeria.
