Pupils at 25 infant and primary schools in Murcia will be offered the chance of bilingual education in the next academic year under a programme which will offer a third of the schools’ classes in English.

The regional government programme will benefit more than one thousand children, and begins, in a first phase, with the first year of primary education, to be extended gradually to all other years at the schools involved. The Murcia government’s regional councillor for education, Constantino Sotoca, said while presenting the programme this Monday that it covers Physical Education, Natural and Social Studies, and Art, while Spanish Language, Maths and Religion do not form part of the scheme.

External exams on proficiency in the subjects taught in English will be set by Trinity College in London, the body which is internationally renowned for examinations in English as a foreign language.

The councillor said teachers taking part in the scheme must follow a 200-hour intensive training course in the use of English in bilingual teaching.

Other measures are being brought in for mixed French and English bilingual teaching in secondary education.
