A local policeman who risked his life to save three people from drowning on a beach in Benissa this week was applauded as a hero by the crowd waiting on shore when the rescue ended. It happened on Tuesday evening after Antonio Páez and his colleague, Cristóbal González, received the call that three swimmers were in trouble in the Cala del Baladrar, with strong currents and 2-metre waves stopping them from reaching the beach.

Officer Páez managed to pull all three to safety, in what La Verdad newspaper said was his second rescue on the same beach. He and his brother, Manolo, rescued two German tourists from drowning there nine years ago.

He and his colleague told the newspaper that the problem on Cala del Baladrar is that the Red Cross lifeguards on duty there finish their working day at 6.30 pm, taking with them the flag which indicates the conditions of the sea.

On the Costa del Sol on Tuesday, Protección Civil lifeguards rescued 19 people on beaches in Marbella who decided to swim despite the red warning flag indicating that bathing was dangerous. Another 12 were rescued on the beach in La Línea, Cádiz province.
