It's the third to have been killed on the roads of Andalucía so far this yearAn Iberian Lynx has been found dead in Huelva province, where it was found run over on the road between Almonte and El Rocío this Thursday morning, within the boundaries of Doñana. The animal is believed to have been around one year old and was a female.
EFE notes that another female, pregnant with two lynx kittens, was found run over on another road in Doñana this March. It had also been shot. A third animal was found dead on a road in Andújar, Jaén province, last week.
The news of this second death came from Juan Romero, spokesman for Ecologistas en Acción in Doñana, and was confirmed by the Junta de Andalucía. Romero questioned the effectiveness of the 26 million € investment in the LIFE programme to protect the threatened species if nothing is done to safeguard the animals on the roads.
The Junta de Andalucía announced earlier this month that Iberian Lynx born in captivity are to be released into the wild this autumn.
