Spain's divorce rate continues to drop

Most who ended their marriage did so in their early forties after a little more than 15 years together

The divorce rate has dropped again in Spain, after a reduction already seen in 2007. Figures from the INE National Statistics Institute released this Thursday show that 13.5% fewer couples chose to legally separate or divorce last year than they did in 2007. Divorce figures were down by 12.5% and separations by almost twice that – 24.4%.

The total number of marriages ended was almost 119,000; in other words, 2.58 marriages ended for every one thousand people in Spain. Melilla and Canarias saw the highest rates, and Castilla-La Mancha the lowest.

Couples chose to end their marriage after an average of 15.6 years together, and most made the decision in their early forties.
