Antonio Pedreira, the judge at the Madrid High Court in charge of the Madrid region side of the Gürtel corruption investigation, where high-ranking members of the Partido Popular regional administration allegedly received backhanders in exchange for public works contracts, has this Tuesday partially lifted the secrecy order governing part of his investigation.

It reveals a list of 71 suspects in the case, who will be called before the court in early October, when each of them will be presented with a DVD with copies of some 17,000 sheets of paper, representing just a third of the official paperwork in the investigation. Most of this part is reported to relate to the initial investigation by National Court judge, Baltasar Garzón, before the case was passed onto the High Courts in Madrid and Valencia.

All of the suspects’ names have been released to the press, and Europa Press notes that one of them is Rosalía Iglesias Villar, the wife of the Partido Popular’s former national treasurer, Luis Bárcenas. Bárcenas, as a Senator, is under investigation for his alleged part in the corruption network by the Supreme Court.

It’s understood the 71 suspects will be called to court to receive their DVDs on 6th, 7th and 8th October.

The Anti-Corruption prosecutor has applied for the case against seven of the suspects to be archived, who may not, in that case, be called to the Madrid High Court.

The list of the 71 contains three regional deputies and four ex PP mayors.

Meanwhile there are press reports that the Partido Popular in Madrid has called on Francisco Camps, the party’s leader in Valencia, to ask for the resignations of both Ricardo Costa and Vicente Rambla, the party’s number two in the region and the first vice-president of the Consell.

However El Mundo reports that Camps has decided to ignore the request. Indeed a statement from Ricardo Costa said that they had taken the action they were going to by ordering an external ‘international audit’ into the party’s funding.
Camps for his part said on Tuesday that he has a clear conscience and that he has always followed the law.
