Ikea has presented its project for Alicante, a complex to be built as part of the Rabasa development project to the north of the city which the Swedish multi-national proposes will include, in addition to the store itself, a commercial centre for other stores and businesses, and a hypermarket.

The total proposed area is more than 130,000 square metres, which would make it one of the company’s largest centres in Europe.
The project was presented to the city’s Mayor, Sonia Castedo, and the president of the Alicante business association, Pedro de Gea, on Wednesday, and is similar, the Mayor said, to the current Ikea complex in the Portuguese city of Oporto. Diario Información described the meeting as informative, to allow the company to present their ideas for Alicante.

There has been opposition from some local businesses from the furniture sector and, from others, against the hypermarket part of the project, and it’s understood that Ikea’s plans are to be discussed at a meeting of local business associations next week.

As regards the timescale, Alicante’s Mayor told Europa Press she believes it would be at least three years, at the very earliest.
