Controversial Parcent development plans thrown out by regional governmentlarger |
smallerBy m.p. - Oct 8, 2009 - 11:45 AMIt's being seen locally as a victory of David over Goliath after years of protests
The people of Parcent are celebrating after hearing the news on Wednesday that, after almost four years of protests, controversial plans to build 1,800 new homes in the village will not now go ahead.
The three development programmes – PAI - to build the massive urbanisation would have increased the local population ten-fold, but the regional government has finally decided to turn them down over their detrimental effect on the local environment. The regional water authority also says there are not enough water reserves to supply such a large development.
The PAI were approved by the previous Partido Popular local administration and, although halted by a landmark decision by the Valencia High Court three years ago, carried along their route for the administrative approval process. The numerous protests locally led the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee to write to the Generalitat de Valencia over the matter.
Beatriz Riera, President of the Veïns de Parcent residents’ association described the news to El País as a victory of David over Goliath.
