Half of the chiringuito beach restaurants along the Andalucian coastline will have to carry out some sort of reform to comply with the new Ley de Costas law next year. Many will have to carry out improvements, others will have to reduce their size or move position.
President of the Andalucian Federation of Beach Businessmen, FAEPLAYAS, Norberto del Castillo, said that in Málaga province about 30% of establishments will be affected because towns such as Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Benalmádena or Marbella have already carried out the changes.
The new law comes as responsibility for beaches is transferred to the Junta de Andalucía at the start of next year. There are about 2,000 beach concessions across the region, 900 of them chiringuitos, which currently employ around 40,000 people.
