The government has announced increased VAT from July and spending cuts as part of the 2010 budgets
Partido Popular leader Mariano Rajoy launched a harsh attack on the Government’s state budget plans for next year in Congress on Tuesday, describing them as ‘lethal for the middle classes’.
Rajoy preferred to pass over the Minister for Tax and the Economy, Elena Salgado, directing his attacks instead directly against the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
Rajoy said the budgets were ‘deliberately designed to make things worse’ and would bring increased debt, increased taxes and more unemployment. Rajoy said the Zapatero administration was a machine which created uncertainty and a lack of confidence.
Despite the protests from the PP, press reports over the weekend indicated that the Government has reached a deal on support for the budget with the PNV Basque Nationalist Party and the CC Canary Island Coalition, which would guarantee its approval.
Prime Minister Zapatero has defended his pact with the PNV, despite their recent criticism of the latest arrests of ETA supporters in the Basque Country.
Meanwhile Elena Salgado said that the PP was not interested in getting out of recession, but only for the crisis to carry them to power and the Moncloa.
