The situation is a complicated one with several companies now involvedUnions fighting to keep the luxury 144 room Byblos Hotel open in Mijas are taking their fight to the courts. They have presented a document which rejects the closure of the establishment, given, they say, that several companies are interested in it.
Unions name the Swedish Trustfort company, and an investment group from Dubai among them. Given that, the Tourism Secretary of the CCOO Union, Lola Villalba, told La Opinión de Málaga that she did not understand why the administrators had called for the closure of the hotel and sacking of the workers, given too that the protocol already signed with Trustfort showed an undertaking to keep the establishment open.
The hotel’s situation is complex one, given that last July, British entrepreneur Lord Allan Sugar purchased two thirds of the property at auction via his Amsprop Spain company. This included the Thalassotherapy facilities and the tennis courts. However their option to buy the third section, which includes the hotel itself, was blocked in the Fuengirola courts by Aifos, the troubled real estate firm which has owned it since the end of 2005, and which is now under bankruptcy protection.
Following the presentation of the unions document there is now a 30 day period where the liquidation of the company will be negotiated.
There are currently 114 workers at the hotel.
