The infighting in the Partido Popular over the control of the Caja Madrid savings banks leads many of the papers in Spain today

El Mundo headlines that the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, has presented his attack on Esperanza Aguirre, the PP regional president of Madrid, as a service to the party leader Mariano Rajoy. The paper says Gallardón interprets the ‘vomit’ of his deputy Cobo, as a display of its collaboration, and ‘unconditional support for the party management’.
El Mundo has a photo of Esperanza Aguirre on her toes, posing during a visit to the Teatros de Canal in the city, and captions ‘Esperanza does not lose her balance’.
El País also leads with the story and headlines that Aguirre is demanding that Rajoy sack the Deputy Mayor from the party for criticizing her. The paper notes the Mayor is supporting his deputy, that the party headquarters in Calle Génova have issued a weak reprimand against Cobo, but has refused to support Aguirre. She says that she will not negotiate with the PP leader unless he takes action.
ABC says that the action Rajoy has taken is to go against Aguirre and declare to the party executive that his candidate for the post remains Rodrigo Rato.
Público says it was another black Monday for Mariano Rajoy, and headlines ‘Open war in the PP’. The paper highlights opposing quotes from six key players in the row.
La Razón sums up the situation with the headline ‘Rajoy will have to decide whether to sanction the Deputy Mayor Cobo for his criticisms of Aguirre. The paper says it is a political storm and that the Rights and Guarantees Committee will decide the future of the Deputy Mayor.

Despite the press reports yesterday the PP spokesperson Cospedal has said, according to El Mundo, that Ricardo Costa is no longer the General Secretart of the party in Valencia.

There is coverage of the collapse of the building in Palma on Sunday night which we now know resulted in seven deaths. El Mundo reports that a legal change delayed an inspection of the block until 2014, despite the appearance of cracks.
El País has a dramatic front page photo of a body buried in the rubble. It tells us that the four story block was built in 1959, and that one resident on the second floor survived, but lost her husband and daughter.
ABC says the collapse has underlined controversy on the safety of buildings. The paper says that residents had complained about the cracks which were inspected without anything being done.

El País notes that the PNV Basque Nationalist Party are breaking with tradition and will support the government’s abortion reforms.
La Razón considers that the party has acted against its Christian tradition.

La Razón reports that the Government is to create a ‘fiscal patrol’ against the submerged economy.

El País tells is that five villages across the country have said they are interested in being home to the new nuclear waste bunker. They are all close to nuclear power stations and whoever is chosen will see 800 million invested in their municipality.

La Razón notes that the work to exhume Federico García Lorca are to start tomorrow, and the identification process is expected to take three months.

La Razón says that, following their previous article on the matter, the Education Department of the Catalan Government has now decided not to rename Christmas.

El Mundo notes that Islamists in Somalia are punishing women who wear bras.
Meanwhile the same paper reports that Spain is sending another frigate to the area to protect the fishermen.

El Mundo highlights a quote from the General in charge in Afghanistan. General McChrystal said ‘Our way of operating in Afghanistan sometimes helps the insurgency’.

El País notes that Karadzic is mocking the court in The Hague by not appearing yesterday. He has demanded more time to prepare his defence.
