A Norwegian man who is passionate about football is on a mission to create the world’s biggest football shirt and, at the same time, raise awareness for the plight of refugees. Bjorn Heidenstrom is cycling from Norway to South Africa to support the Norwegian Refugee Council and, along the way, is collecting signed shirts from football clubs and fans which, when he reaches his destination, will be sewn together to create one huge shirt symbolising unity and passion for both football and the refugee’s plight.
The shirt will be flown as a huge flag during the 2010 World Cup.
Bjorn set off from the Nobel Peace Centre in Norway on 20th June this year, ‘World Refugee Day’, on the first leg of his 10-month journey across 50 countries. He’ll be arriving in Málaga on 21st November and will spend 10 days in the province, when football fans are invited to come along to his diary dates on the Costa del Sol and donate their shirts to his cause.
The first date is for a Five-a-Side game in Nueva Andalucía at 2pm on 21st November. Other dates include Inchy’s Bar in Arroyo de la Miel on the 22nd for the Málaga-Zaragoza match and, on the 26th, the Midas Telecom Open Day at the New Black Cat in Calahonda.
You can track his progress as he cycles on his epic journey on his website
www.theshirt2010.net, and see which shirts he has collected so far and where to send in the shirt from your club.
