A search mounted by the Coastguard off the south eastern coast of Cartagena this Thursday rescued two immigrants on board a small patera boat with the bodies of two other passengers. Their surviving companions were found in a serious condition with dehydration and hypothermia and were transferred by ambulance to hospital in Santa María del Rosell.
Their boat was spotted by the crew of a French petrol tanker when it was some 60 miles off shore. They are believed to have come from Algeria.
The central government representative for the Murcia Region, Rafael González, told EFE the boat had probably lost its way while trying to reach the coast and the passengers had then become so desperate with thirst that they gave in to drinking water from the sea.
