This Autumn has been far drier than last year

The expansion of the desalination plant in Marbella comes online at the start of December when six production lines will treat over 7,000 cubic metres of sea water every day.

This production will allow the water company Acosol to keep the water levels in the La Concepción reservoir above the current 50% level, and thus protect the water table.

Acosol manager, José Bernal, told La Opinión de Málaga that with the expansion to six production lines the desalination plant will now be running at 75% capacity.

The hydrological year has just begun and this year there has been a recent noticeable lack of rain, especially when compared to the wet Autumn seen last year.

José Bernal said that given the lack of rain their guard cannot be lowered, and if the lack of rain continues into the winter they will expand the capacity of the desalination plant to bring all eight production lines into operation.

The Marbella desalination plant supplies about 30% of the drinking water used on the Costa del Sol.
