Mariano Rajoy has already led his party to two election defeats, and if there is one thing he has shown in the face of the recent Gürtel corruption allegations, is that he takes his time before making any decision.

On Tuesday he told a meeting of the party’s National Executive that he would not put up with any more washing of the party’s dirty linen in public, but his authority up to now has been such that the key washerwoman, Esperanza Aguirre, simply chose not to attend.
