The controversial definition appeared in a dictionary created on the blog of a member of the Madrid regional government
The Madrid Region’s councillor for health, Juan José Güemes, has had to apologise over an online dictionary which has been created on his blog, hosted on the Madrid Partido Popular’s official web page. The row erupted over one entry which gave the definition for the word ‘gay’ as: Academically qualified homosexual who uses his/her knowledge to obtain political favours and subsidies from the public purse.’
The dictionary has now been removed from the blog. Guëmes, who Público notes is also the Partido Popular’s regional Secretary for Communication in Madrid, has posted a statement online disclaiming responsibility for that particular and other controversial definitions which appeared in the dictionary. Saying in his apology that any user who wished to do so had access to participate in creating the dictionary online, the health councillor says that if he had been aware of the text of some of the definitions, he would have immediately removed them.
‘I want to make it clear’, he said, ‘that I did not write them and, of course, I do not approve of them nor do I share them’.
The dictionary was removed from the blog this Tuesday.
