There is breaking news this Thursday of an arrest in the murder of Alejandro Ponsoda, the Mayor of Polop de la Marina who was shot outside his home in Xirles in October 2007 and died in hospital eight days later. He was one of 22 people to be murdered in Alicante province that year.

The only news on the arrest so far is that it was made in Alicante province, but there has been no confirmation as yet on whether the person in custody is believed to have fired the fatal shot. It’s understood from El Mundo that further arrests have not been ruled out in the case.

Thursday’s is the first arrest in the investigation since Alejandro Ponsoda was shot three times as he was parking his car outside his home on the night of 19th October 2007. He underwent lengthy surgery to remove a bullet from his brain and, despite an initial improvement in his condition, died in hospital eight days later.

The Partido Popular Mayor was aged 57 when he died and left a wife and two adult daughters.
