Carlos Amigo Vallejo has served the city for 27 years
Spain has lost one of her most liberal Cardinal Archbishops with the retirement of Carlos Amigo Vallejo in Sevilla. The 75 year old said goodbye in a press conference on Thursday after the Pope accepted his resignation letter last month.
The Cardinal has been praised for his 27 years in the position from many quarters. The Regional Government recognised his work for ‘dialogue, tolerance and personal intimacy’, and said Amigo, who was named Favourite Son of Andalucia in 2000, was one of the relevant figures of Catholic Church in Spain during the 20th Century. Even the Andalucian collective of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals thanked him for his tolerant and open attitude over homosexuality and gay marriage.
The Archbishop is to be replaced by his assistant up to now, Juan José Alonso. Alonso has expressed his hope to be a worthy successor, and place his own ‘grain of sand’.
