They and three others became lost in bad weather on SaturdayTwo sisters from Barcelona have died from hypothermia after becoming lost while out hiking on a mountain in Girona. Three others who were part of the same group are in hospital in Girona, where one of them is reported to be seriously ill.
The group was returning from hiking up Puigmal on Saturday, one of the highest mountains in the Catalan Pyrenees, when they were suddenly hit by bad weather. They decided to split into two after losing their way in the wind and snow and contacted emergency services for help.
Rescue teams from the fire service located the first group of two, and the first victim, at 9pm on Saturday. The remainder of their party, with the second victim, was found at 1 o’clock the following morning.
RNE Spanish national television names the two sisters as Nuria and Marta I.M., aged 43 and 45.
