It will mean constructing a 7km tunnel through the mountains
It’s been confirmed by La Verdad newspaper that the Development Ministry has accepted the route supported by the Murcia Region for the high speed rail link between Murcia City and Cartagena. It’s the shortest of the routes proposed and also means that the line will be able to connect with the new international airport planned at Corvera.
But the route is also technically complex and will be the most costly of the options which have been studied. It means building a tunnel through the Sierra de Carrascoy, a 7km structure which La Verdad estimates could take up to a year and a half to build. The tunnel will be part of a 56 km section of line connecting the two cities whose construction, the paper said, could start in 2011.
The Development Minister, José Blanco, announced this summer that the AVE line to Murcia, via Alicante, will be operational in 2014.
