An 81 year old ex Minister, Alberto Oliart, has been chosen to be President of the Spanish state TV and radio broadcaster, RTVE. His naming follows an agreement between the Socialist and Partido Popular parliamentary groups, and comes after the decision of Luis Fernández to resign as advertising is withdrawn from TVE television for the very first time.
Aberto Oliart has already commented to the press that he knows absolutely nothing about television. He comes from Mérida and played an important role in Spain’s transition to democracy.
He’s a lawyer and has held posts in Governments of different colour from Adolfo Suarez where he was Energy Minister and later Minister for Health, and then Minister for Defence under Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo.
There has been some comment in the Spanish press regarding the appointment of a man in his 80’s.
