El Mundo headlines that the Ministry of Defence wants to extradite the two captured pirates to Kenya. The paper notes that the court was informed at 9pm on the night of October 3, that the Navy had detained them. El Mundo says that Judge Garzón asked for the case, but wanted a formal denuncia to be formed and it was the Deputy Prime Minister, De La Vega, who ordered the State Prosecutors to proceed and it was on the 4th that Garzón then called for the pirates transfer to Spain.
El País says that the Ministry for Defence supports the plan for the pirates to serve their time in Somalia.
However La Razón tells us that one of the charges placed against the two pirates mean they cannot be extradited.
ABC considers how the pirates’ lawyer was chosen, and says a CNI secret service spokesman has denied any mediation in the selection. ABC claims that reliable sources have confirmed to the paper that part of a four million dollar ransom has already been paid.

La Razón leads with the headline ‘Public sinners’ and highlights a warning from the Spanish Church that politicians who support abortion cannot take communion.
The paper has a large front page photo of the Church’s spokesman, Juan Antonio Martínez Camino, and notes a report from the Family Policy Institute which shows that a woman aborts in Europe every 25 seconds.

El Mundo notes that a man in his 80’s who has admitted that he knows nothing about television, is to preside the state broadcaster RTVE. Alberto Oliart was chosen by agreement between the PSOE and PP parliamentary groups.
El País leads with the story and headlines ‘Zapatero rescues an ex UCD minister for the new RTVE’. The paper notes the appointment of the 81 year old has the approval of Mariano Rajoy. He will face a broadcaster without advertising for the first time and the change to TDT after the analogue switch off.
Público leads with the story and says that Zapatero and Rajoy are ‘tuned in’ on RTVE. The paper says the two leaders did the deal by themselves.

El Mundo has a photo of the meeting yesterday between the Madrid regional president, Esperanza Aguirre, and Rodrigo Rato who is on his way to be the new Chairman of the Caja Madrid savings bank. The paper captions that Rato has ‘come out of the closet’ and criticised the Government’s policies for the first time.
El Mundo notes that Aguirre wants to reduce income tax for those who earn less than 1000 € a month and for small businesses.
El País notes that Rato called for ‘urgent economic reforms to get out of recession’.
ABC also has a front page photo of Rato and Agurire.

ABC tells us that the Caja Castilla La Mancha granted credits worth 982 million last year to people who were linked to its board. The paper says there were 87 loans for an average 11.2 million. The Bank of Spain intervened when the bank went bust in March this year.

El Mundo reports that Barack Obama has given in to the generals and will be sending 30,000 more soldiers to Afghanistan.

ABC notes the confirmation from the European Court of Human Rights that ETA’s political wing, Batasuna, is illegal, and has closed down its access to all the institutions.

El País tells us that an electrical fault has left 60 million Brazilians in the dark.

Back in Spain, El País notes the arrest of Lorenzo Sanz, the ex President of Real Madrid, for allegedly taking art out of the country illegally.
El Mundo tells us that several of the better known galleries will not be attending the ARCO modern art fair in Madrid, because of the recession.

El Pais reports that toxic fish from the Ebro river are on sale in Romania. Cataluña has authorised the export of Siluro, a predator fish which has destroyed much of the fauna of the Ebro since the 70’s. It’s not usually eaten here because of its high mercury content.

More on the masturbation classes in Extremadura, where El Mundo and ABC both report that the Junta is ‘extremely proud to be promoting masturbation’. El Mundo reveals that the workshops for youngsters are being organised by a sexshop in Madrid.

And finally,
El Mundo has the amazing story of the Spanish painter and decorator who can only work because he gives himself dialysis in his van three times a day.
