Harsh words were exchanged at a session of the Valencia regional parliament on Thursday when, at one point, a heated Francisco Camps accused the Socialists’ spokesman of wishing him dead. His exact words to Ángel Luna were, ‘You would love to get hold of a van, come to my house at dawn, and in the morning I’d be found face down in a ditch’.
It came during the control session, when MPs from all parties represented in the Valencia parliament have the opportunity to question the Partido Popular Regional President. The two central themes this Thursday morning were the recent changes in the PP’s regional leadership in Valencia and the Socialists’ complaint to the Valencia High Court accusing Camps and his team of illegal funding of the PP in collusion with businessmen. ‘When someone hides behind a complaint, it means they have nothing to offer to the public,’ Camps claimed, adding that ‘Every public contract which is not awarded to a construction company from Valencia will be the fault of Ángel Luna’.
Luna, for his part, described the changes in the Valencia Partido Popular’s leadership as a defensive move, claiming the only political strategy Camps has is to ‘resist’. Francisco Camps was for a time implicated as a suspect in the Gürtel corruption investigation into irregular funding of the Partido Popular and his former No. 2 in Valencia, Ricardo Costa, was forced to resign as the PP General Secretary in Valencia over the affair.
The Valencia High Court investigation in Gürtel was archived after the court found there to be no crime in the acceptance by Camps and another three PP politicians in Valencia of gifts of suits from the corruption network. The Valencia Socialists and the prosecution service have both appealed that decision to the Supreme Court.
Later on Thursday Camps apologised for his comments. ‘I would like to apologise if I have upset anyone’s sensibility’. He said that his statement came in a ‘heated debate’, but El Mundo reports that some in the Partido Popular think the Gürtel case is getting to him.
