Mariano Rajoy calls for a clean, united party at Partido Popular convention larger | smaller By m.p. - Nov 15, 2009 - 2:17 PM
PP leader, Mariano Rajoy - EFE
He announced an internal code of ethics and a pact against corruption
This Sunday, Mariano Rajoy closed the Partido Popular convention which was taking place in Barcelona over the weekend with a call for a party which is united and clean of corruption. He spoke of being clean in public life as a moral requirement, saying that any member of a political party must show exemplary conduct.
A united and clean party is demanded, he said, for the formidable tool of the Partido Popular which can bring about the changes which are needed in Spain.
The PP leader announced a code of internal ethics which the party is to approve next week and, also next week, will come details of the Partido Popular’s proposals for a pact with other political parties against corruption.
There were however two noted absences for the PP leader’s closing speech: the two regional leaders who have been at the centre of the recent internal division within the party over the Caja Madrid affair and the Gürtel corruption case.
The PP President of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, sent her apologies over the serious illness of a relative, while her colleague in Valencia, Francisco Camps, had a previous engagement at the Formula 1 Ferrari World Finals in Cheste, Valencia, on Sunday.
