Paqui Bellido, an Izquierda Unida councillor in Torrox, has announced that the Town Hall is to exhume the remains of Civil War victims which lie in the cemetery in the town centre. There are two mass graves in the cemetery, and it’s understood from Diario Sur that the descendants of one of the victims buried there have asked for the remains to be identified.
The councillor said the Town Hall will apply for funding to cover the cost of the exhumation.
The Málaga branch of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory had previously announced that a mass grave in Alfarnatejo is to be opened. It’s believed to lie at the entrance to the village cemetery and contains the bones of three people shot during the Civil War: a 19 year old from Riogordo and two men from Alfarnatejo and Málaga.
