Investigations are to continue at the San Rafael cemetery in Málaga into a further nine mass Civil War graves known to be located at the site, the largest such site in Spain. Work is already underway on identifying the 2,840 bodies which have been exhumed from the first nine graves which have been inspected over the past three years, and the work now will be matching up DNA samples with the victims’ descendants.
EFE said samples have been taken from more than 100 relatives, of the 300 the Málaga branch of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory hopes to take.
There is documentary evidence to show that more than 4,300 people were buried in mass graves at the former San Rafael cemetery, and the bodies so far recovered include women and children, Civil Guard, Republican soldiers, militia men, and civilians who were killed for their political views. Many were executed and many others were inmates who died in the appalling conditions at the provincial prison.
