The first phase of work to exhume the site in Alfacar where the remains of the Granada poet, Federico García Lorca, are believed to lie has concluded with no major discoveries. Ground-penetrating radar had detected six ‘anomalies’ in the ground, and four of those have now been excavated, showing only however a large rock which had earlier been detected as a change in the ground’s density.
The team now moves on to inspect the remaining two areas of anomaly detected, which may or may not turn out to be mass graves.
Five other civil war victims are believed to lie at the same site: the two banderilleros, Francisco Galadí and Joaquín Arcollas, the teacher, Dióscoro Galindo, a tax inspector, Fermín Roldán, and the restaurant owner, Miguel Cobo.
