The Prime Minsiter of Egypt, Ahmed Nazif, has promised an investigation into the tragic accident last Thursday when a tourist boat with 14 Spaniards on board went down in the Red Sea, off Sharm el-Sheikh. The Egyptian crew and 12 of the Spaniards from the diving trip to the Ras Mohammed National Park survived, but the bodies of a couple from Valencia have yet to be found.
Spain’s Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was in Cairo on Tuesday as part of an official trip to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He announced after a meeting with Dr Nazif that Egypt will investigate the circumstances of the accident and will take any action that is necessary if the investigation shows there are those who must be held to account.
The parents of Israel Pérez and María Lourdes González arrived in Cairo on Monday, after three days in Sharm el-Sheikh where they have been waiting for any news on the operation to recover the bodies. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero passed on his and the Spanish government’s condolences for their loss at a meeting at his Cairo hotel on Tuesday morning, shortly before he was due to meet Dr Ahmed Nazif.
El Mundo notes Zapatero’s other meetings on his trip as with the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, and with King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia.
