As expected, the Civil Guard have this Tuesday carried out a court-ordered search of the Town Hall building in Polop de la Marina following the arrest of the Partido Popular Mayor, Juan Cano, earlier in connection with the murder of his predecessor in the post, Alejandro Ponsoda.
Ponsoda was fatally shot outside his home in Xirles on the night of 19th October 2007, over, detectives believe, his opposition to a real estate deal. He died in hospital eight days after the shooting.
There’s been increasing movement in the investigation this month, after the first suspect was taken into custody in Albatera. Juan Cano became the seventh person to be arrested. His home was also searched by officers on Tuesday and it’s been confirmed that the Partido Popular has temporarily suspended his party membership until the results of the investigation are known.
Polop’s Deputy Mayor, María Dolores Zaragoza, read out a statement on behalf of the Town Hall on Tuesday morning, asking for calm and saying that life continues as normal in the town while the investigation to determine the facts of the case is underway. She echoed the words of the PP’s provincial president, José Joaquín Ripoll, asking that the presumption of innocence be respected.
The first six suspects arrested in the case have all been remanded to prison without bail, while Juan Cano has yet to appear before the judge.
