The child is now out of danger in the hospital's neonatal unit

A woman arrested in Cartagena faces a charge of attempted murder for disposing of her new-born baby in a waste bin in the hospital where the child was born, the Nuestra Señora de Rosell. Named as A.C.P.L., aged 20, she was attending the hospital on another matter when she went into labour in the hospital toilets, then dumped her new baby in the rubbish bin inside the cubicle.

She hid the child from sight by covering him up with rubbish, and later told officers that she was scared and didn’t know what to do with the child. She is understood to have two other children.

The child was discovered, still alive, by a friend who had become concerned at the length of time she was taking in the cubicle. Europa Press reports that she had claimed to the friend that the bloodstains that were visible when she came out were due to menstruation.

Staff at the hospital acted in time to save the new-born’s life and he is now out of danger in the neonatal unit, awaiting a judicial decision on his future. Cartagena Town Hall’s social services department have been advised of the case.
