The Duke and Duchess of Lugo, the Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar, have confirmed they are to divorce. 12 years after their wedding, and two years after announcing a temporary separation, on Wednesday the couple published a statement in which it is confirmed that they have signed divorce papers.
According to the statement released by their lawyers, Doña Elena and Jaime de Marichalar have signed an agreement to make the split of possessions ‘in mutual and common agreement’. The statement also notes the affection and consideration with which Don Jaime is viewed by the Infanta’s family.
The divorce is the first in the Spanish Royal Family, and was announced while the King was away on an official visit to Malta. Queen Sofía was to have been with him, but she finally did not make the trip feeling indisposed.
