He is accused of ordering the contract killing of his predecessor, Alejandro Ponsoda, over a real estate dealThe Partido Popular Mayor of Polop de la Marina, Juan Cano, was ordered to prison on remand and without bail by the judge on Thursday, accused of ordering the murder of his predecessor, Alejandro Ponsoda, outside his home in October 2007.
Juan Cano appeared before the judge in Court Nº2 in Villajoyosa, and took up his right to remain silent. The judge ordered him to prison and kept reporting restrictions in place in the case. Six others have been arrested in the case and they too are now in prison.
Despite his sending to jail the local Ayuntamiento issued a statement saying that Cano remained as Mayor as he had not presented any resignation to the council, although he has been temporarily suspended from the Partido Popular.
