The parents of the child at the centre of the obesity row in Orense, have said he has not been attending school because of an accident. They were called to court yesterday after their son missed 46 days of the last academic year, and face possible charges of child abandonment.
The parents, Luis Montoya and Magarita Gabarres, are refusing to hand over their son to the authorities after social services ruled that his obesity was reason to take the child into care. The ten year old weighs some 70 kilos.
The parents’ lawyer, José Manuel Rodríguez, says that the parents are being persecuted for protecting their son. He claimed that if the boy was sent to a youngsters centre it would cause him ‘brutal damage’.
The child remains whereabouts unknown and the parents face an additional charge of disobedience for not handing him over.
