The councillor awarded council contracts to his brother in law

The Partido Popular Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, is refusing to sack the councilor for the Bailén –Miraflores area of the city, Manuel Marmolejo, despite the councillor’s admission that he awarded 15 contracts to his brother in law over the past three years.

The councilor has admitted to La Opinión de Málaga that his action has broken the law which obliges him to abstain in such circumstances, but said he was unaware of the law at the time.

Mayor de la Torre ruled out sacking the councilor claiming that he had acted ‘in good faith’ and that ‘the matter had little effect from the budgetary point of view, and that the Ayuntamiento had not suffered any prejudice as a result’.

He said the City Hall could give contracts to companies in which there is a close family member ‘because it is a competitive world’, but he said that Marmolejo will abstain in the future.

The PSOE opposition in the city has said it is a serious matter and that once again favoritism has been given to a company of a PP family member. They claim 85 contracts have been granted over the past three years with a value of nearly two million € in such circumstances.
