The Socialist Mayor of the inland Málaga village of Villanueva del Trabuco is in court this Tuesday, where he will answer charges of perversion of the course of justice over a building licence issued for land classified as unsuitable for development. Antonio Vegas Morales faces a possible eight year ban from office and a fine of more than 2,000 €.
The case relates to a licence granted more than 10 years ago, in June 1998, which the prosecutor states in his initial conclusions was issued by mayoral decree without the proper administrative procedures being followed. The site is also understood from Europa Press to have been classified as protected land under the local planning ordinances which had been approved by the Town Hall the year before the licence was granted.
