The forecast of heavy rain and snowfall led some villages in the L’Alcoià-Comtat district of Alicante province to close schools on Monday, with classes suspended in Banyeres de Mariola, Agres, Alfafara, Alcoleja and Benillova as a precaution. All three villages are more than 500 metres above sea level, and El País reports that the bad weather also closed schools in Dénia and Xàbia.

In Calpe and Dénia, the rain which had been falling since Sunday afternoon and the high winds expected for Monday forced the majority of the local fishing fleets to remain in port. Some of the ferries covering the route between Dénia and the Baleares were suffering delays and were diverted to Valencia, while some roads were closed on the coast between Calpe and Dénia. Others inland in northern Alicante province were also affected.

There has been heavy rainfall and some snow in Alcoy, where El País said the two main access roads to the town were closed to traffic. The port in Gandia, Valencia province, was closed on Monday.

The regional government has issued a pre-emergency alert for heavy rainfall on the northern coast of Alicante province, for high winds on the Valencia region’s coast and for snow in the region’s three provinces.

Maximum temperatures were expected to drop by as much as 6 degrees in some parts of Alicante province.
