The Mayor of Almuñécar, Juan Carlos Benavides, is on the stand at the provincial court in Granada this Monday on the charge of alleged misuse of public funds. The trial is by jury and follows a complaint the Mayor brought against Almuñécar’s former Partido Popular Mayor, Juan Luis González Montoro.
Benavides is alleged to have used public money to pay the 9,000 € he was required to deposit as a bond in the complaint he placed against the ex Mayor.
Europa Press reports that Almuñécar’s current Mayor faces a possible two year ban from public office and a fine which could amount to as much as 27,000 € if he is found guilty.
