The 11 in the National Court - EFE
The group of 11 Pakistanis and Indians had links to Al QaedaThe 11 Islamists who were accused of planning a terrorist attack on the Barcelona Metro have been found guilty, in the Penal Hall of the Spanish National Court, on the charge of belonging to a terrorist organisation, and sentenced to prison terms of between eight and 14 years.
The group of 11 Pakistanis and Indians, Mahroof Ahmed Mirza, Mohammed Ayud Elahi Bibi, Ahmed Hafeez, Qadeer Malik, Sahib Iqbal, Mohammed Tarik, Roshan Jamal Khan, Mehmooh Khalid, Inram Cheema, Mohamed Shoaib and Aqeel Uhr Rehman Abassi, were cleared of the charge of conspiracy to carry out a terrorist act however, because hardly any explosives were found and the judge considered that they lacked ‘a sufficiently concrete and determined plan’.
The case was decided by three magistrates, Javier Gómez Bermúdez, Manuela Fernández and Javier Martínez Lázaro, who considered that the group maintained links to the Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, linked to Al Qaeda, and that people who could act as terrorists were being sent to Barcelona to carry out an attack.
The testimony of a protected witness, known as F-1, was key in the case, and his statements were supported by evidence found in a house in Calle Santa Madroña in the city.
