A forest fire which broke out in the Sierra del Conjuro in Motril on Monday afternoon destroyed nine hectares of land before firemen managed to bring the blaze under control after fighting to control the flames for almost 5 hours.
Infoca reinforcements arrived from Málaga at around 6.30 pm, after 15 fire fighters from Motril had been battling the blaze for more than three hours, with the flames spreading rapidly in the high winds. Ideal newspaper reports that it was finally brought under control at around 7.30 pm.
Motril’s Deputy Mayor, José García Fuentes, who is also the councillor responsible for the local fire brigade, said the Motril brigade’s rapid response prevented what could have been an ecological disaster.
