A new night-time team time trial is to be added to the Vuelta de España cycle race next year, and will indeed start the event. It’s not the only change announced on Wednesday by the race organisers who have changed the colour of the leader’s jersey to red in what will be the 75th anniversary edition of the race.
The shirt has been called gold for some time, but in fact remained yellow as in the Tour de France, but changing it to red puts it in line with other Spanish team events, such as the football squad.
This year’s race will start in the evening heat of Sevilla on August 28 at 9pm in a team event against the clock through the streets and avenues of the Andalucian capital.
Total race length is 3,352.6 kms, split into 21 stages, with the last stage starting in the Madrid town of San Sebastián de los Reyes.
The rides will face 40 mountain passes, three of them of the harshest special category, including Gijón-Cotobello, Solares-Lagos de Covadonga, Burgos-Peña Cabarga, and San Martín de Valdeiglesias-Bola del Mundo.
The race will also see a stage end and start in both Marbella and Málaga and will also visit Murcia, Orihuela and Calpe.
