The Prosecutors Office is calling for prison sentences for 11 accused following the accident during the construction of the A7 motorway in Almnuñecar in November 2005 which resulted in the death of six workers, five of them Portuguese.
It happened when a bridge under construction came down.

Investigations into the tragedy have been drawn out, but the oral hearing is expected soon, with the engineering director of the project for the section between La Herradura and Taramay, Pablo Jiménez, is charged with a crime against the rights of workers, six counts of negligent homicide and three of negligent injury.

The safety coordinator from the Ministry for Development, Juan Mena, is among another 8 accused, all of whom face a four year prison term. The Prosecutors’ Office has underlined what it sees as the ‘omissions’ committed by the accused.

The remaining accused are the local representative of UTE La Herradura, the works chief and safety technician from the same company, a representative from Estructuras y Montajes Prefabricados, the accident prevention technician, head of project and site head from that company, and the representative from Puentes y Calzadas.
