Madrid has been the city in Spain to win the most in this year’s Christmas ‘Gordo’ lottery.
78,294 was the winning number this year, sending 300,000 € for each decimo or tenth of a ticket for those lucky enough to spend their 20 € on the number which sold in its entirety in the Administration 146 in Calle Bravo Murillo in Madrid, not far from where the Gordo is drawn each year.
The second prize, 53,152, saw all its series being sold in the Madrid dormitory town of Getafe. It brought 100,000 € for every decimo and was sold only in administration number 10 in Getafe.
The 10,104 third prize, worth 50,000 € a decimo went mostly to Sant Joan de Vilatorrada, El Prat de Llobregat, Puig-Reig and Barcelona city, but saw some series sold also in Madrid, Torrelavega in Cantabria and Corvera in Asturias.
Cataluña was the region to get most of the two fourth prizes. 29,013 was first to be drawn, worth 20,000 € a decimo. Most of that number went to Barcelona, but some series also were sold in Valencia and Madrid.
The other fourth prize 69,393 saw all series sold in Reus, Tarragona.
The famous Catalan lottery in Sort, which means ‘luck’ in Catalan, saw only one 5th prize, 77,607, despite the massive numbers of tickets sold there each year, and this year especially so as 70% of sales were over the internet. ‘La Bruixa d’Or’ sold a complete fifth prize and handed out 10 million € in winnings.
The other fifth prizes were for the numbers 43,802, 51,972, 49,271, 57,580, 31,821, 6679 and 34,030, all of which were shared out across many provinces of the country.
More than 2.32 billion € was given in prizes this year. The most popular numbers sold were those ending in either 5 or 7, and the chance of winning a big prize, according to a study by the Carlos III University in Madrid was around one in 50,000.
Lady luck is such that a corrupt Spanish ex Mayor is among this year’s winners. Eugenio Hidalgo, who has been found guilty of town planning irregularities when he was Mayor of Andratx on Mallorca, is known to have won a fifth prize in the draw.
Also workers in the Madrid offices of Grupo Marsans, the transport company owned by the heavily indebted chairman, Gerardo Díaz Ferrán, picked up some of the second prize in Getafe, and other workers in the firm in Toledo and Cáceres are sharing 14 decimos of the first prize, some 4.2 million €.
